  • This image shows the Northern Lights as seen from France on October 11, 2024. It was a fascinating event, but one that can easily be ruined by light pollution. Fortunately, many villages in Normandy switch off their streetlights in the middle of the night.

Several lampposts can be seen in this image, yet only one remains lit. Imagine if all of them were turned on. The aurora would be washed away by artificial light. This photograph is a reminder that preserving dark skies does not only benefit astronomers, it also allows everyone to experience rare and unforgettable natural phenomena.
