An image taken from the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie dark sky reserve, above the Tasman Lake river outlet. Here the full arch of the winter Milky Way is on display, from the great rift in the north, to the gum nebula in the south. Scattered throughout the band of out galaxy are numerous star forming regions, hydrogen clouds glowing red as young massive stars ionise the gas around them.
